Dogs in the Vineyard is about God’s Watchdogs, young men and women called to preserve the Faithful in a hostile frontier territory. The setting is a fantasy inspired by pre-statehood Utah, the Deseret Territory, in the early-mid 19th century. Player characters travel from town to isolated town, carrying mail, news, and doctrine, healing the sick, supporting the weary, and pronouncing judgment upon the wicked. Picture a landscape of high mountains, icy rivers and cedar woods, falling away westward into scrublands, deserts, buttes and swells. The summer skies are heartbreaking blue, but the winters are long and killing.
The system features a unique conflict-resolution mechanic, which weighs the "stakes" of the conflict against the temptation to escalate with violence. The book also includes copious amounts of advice for game masters.
Won the 2004 Indie Game of the Year award.

| 4 + 4 | Frank Sronce | Dogs in the Vineyard. A novel rules-light game of justice and action in an old west that never was. [ Read Review ] |
| 4 + 4 | matthijs | Dogs in the Vineyard. It's about God's watchdogs protecting the Faith in 19th-century Utah. It’s cheap, it’s really good, and it’s different without being all pretentious and condescending about it.

| 10 / 10 | fifth_child | The setting alone would make Dogs in the Vineyard memorable. The town creation rules alone would make it a good game. The dice mechanics alone would make it one of the best games ever created. To have all three together is much, much more than anyone could reasonably hope for. And yet, Vincent gave them to us. |
| 9 / 10 | Azidhak | A strong game on consequences and morality. |
