The original edition of HârnMaster appeared in 1986, a few years after Columbia games first published HârnWorld, a fantasy setting by N. Robin Crossby. While HârnWorld was first published as systemless setting, HârnMaster is a rules set tailored for it.
Often referred as one of the most realistic and yet functioning system or one of the heaviest 80-style rules still alive these days - depending on whom you ask - HârnMaster is a d100-based system with plenty of attributes, skills and some charts. It contains articles on character creation, skills, combat, religion (mostly rules), magic (called Shek Pvar) and several articles for running campaign (like a short bestiary, treasures, etc).
The black and white art is created by Eric Hotz.

| 4 + 5 | Arthur Reyes | HarnMaster 3rd Edition. Realistic without sacrificing playability, HarnMaster is a mature, superbly crafted, role-playing game offering a great deal of versatility for the discriminating gamer. Highly recommended. [ Read Review ] |
| 2 + 3 | Lev Lafayette | Harnmaster (1st ed). Below average physical production and layout does not give credit to the good internal and external art. Game system is simulationist to a fault, sometimes overly detailed, and lacks narrative input. At the same time however, Harnmaster makes real effort to be authentic, medieval and has many interesting ideas. [ Read Review ] |

| 8 / 10 | Skiorht | Hârnmaster 1 & Gold were our group's games of choice for a decade, and remain highly playable despite their heavy rules. There is a significant difference between the more detailed 1st and Gold editions and the more streamlined 2nd & 3rd editions, which emphasise the fantastic elements of the setting slightly more. |
| 6 / 10 | Crom | Too rule-heavy, but beautiful attention to detail. |
