Gamma World takes place in the far future after cataclymic wars and destruction. Players play the survivors of this wasteland who fight savages, weird beasts and deranged robots, find and figure out ancient technology, and hopefully help rebuild civilization.
Players can be "pure strain humans" - normal people, or mutant humans, animals, and even plants and synthetic lifeforms - afflicted with wildly unrealistic and sometimes wacky mutations that serve either as cool powers or severely debilitating conditions.
See separate entries for versions that instead use the Alternity system and the d20 system.

| 9 / 10 | walkerp | I give it a 9 because it was one of the best the year it came out. Going back to it today, the art still stands out and the creativity of many of the ideas is also there. But as a system and a setting, it is a real mess. That's more of a function of the state of evolution of the hobby. It deserves its place in the hall of fame despite my contemporary criticisms. |
| 10 / 10 | Sprue Rubbles | This introduced me to the post-apocalypse genre and the wackiness had a big influence on my imagination growing up. Trampier's artwork, the bizarre flowchart for artifacts, black ray guns, flying lions that love to eat fashionable clothes, bunnies that can turn metal into rubber, characters can have defects, and mutations for plants... nothing comes close. |
