Blue Rose bills itself as "the roleplaying game of romantic fantasy." Drawing on the subgenre populated by authors such as Mercedes Lackey and Tamora Pierce, the book recreates and expands on the tropes in the world of Aldea; specifically the land of Aldis, an egalitarian society of learning and prosperity, which is bounded by neighbors who are, by turns, a repressive theocracy, an undead sorcerer-king and plains-dwelling nomads.
The system, True20, is a refinement of the OGL mechanics first seen in Mutants & Masterminds, such as the damage save replacing hit points. Some time after Blue Rose's publication, Green Ronin spun the system off into its own book, True20 Adventure Roleplaying, which divorced it from any particular setting and presumably further refined the system.

| 4 + 4 | jhkim | Blue Rose. A strong design which balances familiar elements (standard fantasy tropes) and putting them in a new light. The setting is a little vague and dry (not unusually so for RPGs), and the rules are excellently handled. [ Read Review ] |
| 3 + 4 | Jürgen Hubert | Blue Rose. A setting with a few novel twists, as well as a streamlined version of the d20 system. Whether or not either will suit your tastes is up to you. [ Read Review ] |

| 5 / 10 | JongWK | Insipid setting, great rules. Go for True 20 Adventure Roleplaying instead. |
| 2 / 10 | mcrow | one of the worst RPGs I have ever paid for. |
