"Roleplaying in Occupied America"
In The Price of Freedom, America's worst Cold War nightmare came true: the Soviets developed an orbital defense system that neutralized America's strategic nuclear reserve. Soviet occupation forces have now come in to take over America. It's the job of the PCs, as American freedom fighters, to wage a guerrilla war to delay, destroy, and stymie the Soviet plans, a la "Red Dawn".
The system is based on a 1-20 scale for skills and attributes, with 10 being average or competent. The system is a roll under, with the player rolling a d20 with a target number modified by the situation (stressed, inadequate resources, etc.) Hero points supplement character abilities, allowing them to do the impossible. Combat is done on a hex map with counters, with damage checks made after an initial successful hit roll is made.
The box set contains:
- A Player's Book that has the basics of the game, an equipment list, and a section on waging a guerrilla war (Including "Why we'll win.").
- A Gamemaster's Book that has a section on adventures and campaigns for TPoF, expanded rules, more detailed combat with different scenarios described, and a background section with Soviet plans, a breakdown of the various occupation forces, and a timeline of events leading up to the start of the game and beyond.
- 4 "Freedom Files": a brief synopsis of the game, a character sheet, a set of sample characters to play, and a quick reference chart.
- 2 maps, a counter sheet, a counter tray, and a 20 sided die
