Tunnels & Trolls is usually considered the second role-playing game ever published, after the original Dungeons & Dragons. A sword-and-sorcery dungeoncrawling game with a distinct sense of humor, it was devised to be a simpler way to go monster hunting.

Cheaper, easier, and with a more consistent set of rules, Tunnels & Trolls was quite successful and for a brief period even rivaled Dungeons & Dragons in popularity. It was very influential on later designs. Five minor editions were published between 1975 and 1979, and then 25 years lapsed before the next edition. There are 16 editions of Tunnels & Trolls.
