6 / 10ModernZorkerAt this point, the guys at TSR are still splashing around in the kiddie pool, figuring out which end is up and what they want to do once they really get rolling. Like issue #1, this is a short newsletter (only 4 double-sided pages), so they are limited with what they can do. Gary Gygax was infamous for his love of wargaming and medieval historical minutia, and he lets this aspect of his personality nerd out in the "Medieval Pole Arms" piece. While modern incarnations of the rules have pretty much streamlined the weapon systems, Gary clearly wanted to educate his players on the hows and whys of medieval infantry and the weapons they brought to bear against mounted opponents. It's crazy hyper-specific, and man, do I love it. The artwork is a nice touch, visually expressing each specific design so we don't have to try and imagine it. All around, this is still very hard to review objectively. Nobody else was doing this sort of thing, at least not in this way, and two issues in we can see ideas exploding off the pages as everybody gets the opportunity to run wild with their own pet likes, goals, and projects. There's a little humor, a little sadness (the passing of Don Kaye, a co-founder of TSR), and some nice slices of hobby history in these pages which make it interesting for more than just the articles.
