What is Sojourner’s Quest all about? It is a social fantasy role playing game. It is a game where people will sit around a table, with pencil and paper, and get involved in a storyline created by the game referee, also known as the Game Master. It involves basic arithmetic skills, a good sense of problem solving in a fantasy milieu, and the ability to minimally role play a Character. Role play is kind of like acting on a small scale. One would act as though one is the Character in question, and try to think like a particular kind of archetypal Character like a Healer, Sorcerer, Thief, or Warrior. Do not panic! The rules of the game guide you for the most part, and the persona you make creatively for your Character takes you into the game as a Player.
The game is a retro-clone, or simulacrum, of old school Advanced Dungeons & Dragons. There are many similarities, and there are many differences; the details of each game are not comparable, while the idea of play is the same. The game is allowed as long as it distributes the Open Game License published by Wizards of the Coast, and I have noted some areas where there is apparent overlap between the two games. The OGL is a standard acceptance of responsibility when writing an adventure role playing game that is very much like the old school game. Sojourner’s Quest, is slightly more unique in an overall way: I have streamlined the basics; keeping only what I deemed necessary for play. Combat Tables are re-seen, Redemption Rolls & Thief Abilities have been simplified, a host of new Healer and Sorcerer spells, and new Magical Items and gaming rules. And a lot more.
I began writing the game in January of 2013. I truly did not expect the project to unfold as it did, meaning the revisions and clarifications became more of a project than originally thought. Now it is March of 2013 and I am in the final editing and play testing of the game. One of the matters I have come to accept is that there shall always be revisions that need to be written, there shall be new spells, new adventures to write, and a host of other unexpected details I cannot foresee. I have been a Game Master & Player for over thirty-four years, and I have not lost that sense of adventuring yet. I do not intend to. In my generation this has got to be one of the finer types of gaming to come along; I feel fortunate that I am part of this good gaming community and hope to make my own contribution by writing Sojourner’s Quest; I hope the Players-to-be shall accept this game and find their own excitement through playing.
