Game Summary

The Cure for the Common Game.

Too long have your role-playing games been held in the bonds of substandard gamemasters, bound in needlessly complicated rule sets, and enslaved by players who will avoid doing anything unless it counts toward leveling up! It is time to take a stand!

Learn from the masters the ancient secrets of how to:
  • Become a certified XDM and impress dates (Do-it-yourself secret initiation rites included.)
  • Design epic adventures that tell stories.
  • Perform magical feats to amaze your players, and even make them disappear!
  • Employ actual combustion (yes, "fire," and yes, it's dangerous) to enhance your games!
  • Hijack any game as a player, and deal with any player revolution as an XDM!

5 + 3ShannonA. A funny book about how we can run games better, sometimes innovative and sometimes a bit dated. It has magic tricks too. Stuff they probably don't want you to know.
4 + 4simon_hibbs. Well written and entertaining, with great cartoons throughout this book has a heavyweight goal - to revolutionise the replationship between player and DM.

3 / 10DoveI found the tone annoyingly condescending, and the content gimmicky and disappointing. The advice ranges from the marginally useful (outlines of an epic story) to the implausably impractical (using an assistant to deliver a holographic message) to the painfully bad (encouragement to trap, punish, and arbitrarily kill characters). A good read for laughs (the illustrations are cute), but look elsewhere for serious role-playing advice.
6 / 10ShannonAGreat art! Funny writing! The content is a bit more scattered however, with some good ideas scattered amidst magic tricks and stage craft that are unlikely to be applicable to 9 out of 10 readers.
