e20 System Evolved is a d20 System variant that attempts to genericize, streamline, and update the system. Inspirations include Unearthed Arcana (UA), Pathfinder, Mutants & Masterminds, Star Wars: Saga Edition (SW:SE), Dungeons & Dragons (D&D) 4th edition, and Savage Worlds.
Feats, talents, and stunts are gained based on total character level, not individual class levels, and can be retrained. Racial attribute modifiers are always positive, and, like in D&D 4E, fantasy races often get two fixed plus 2 bonuses. Also similar to 4E, some talents are effectively "per encounter" (require a rest of 1 minute to recharge). Occupations and stat-based classes are similar to d20 Modern, and talent trees (instead of class features) are from the same source. Advanced and prestige classes do not exist. Instead of skill points, skills improve automatically with level, like in SW:SE, and are not tied to any stat in particular. "Challenges" are similar to UA's complex skill checks and 4E's skill challenges. Also similar to 4E, hit points tend to be higher and static defenses are used. Base attack bonus has been replaced by weapon skills. Basic and elite monster variants are used (similar to 4E's minions and elite opponents).
Notes on This Edition
This edition refers to any of the prerelease versions, which were freely available. While labeled "Lite", the prerelease versions were effectively beta versions of the complete game, and became quite large. The final (version 1.0) "Lite" version will be trimmed down considerably once the core rules are released. Version 0.2 was 20 pages, while Version 0.5 expanded to 92 pages.
