Homeland is the first novel to feature the dark elf Drizzt Do'Urden, the iconic Advanced Dungeons & Dragons character, as the primary protagonist. Written as a prequel to the Icewind Dale Trilogy, it covers his early life in the Underdark city of Menzoberranzan, and his struggle to retain his sense of morality in a twisted and dark society.

Homeland is the first novel in the Dark Elf Trilogy, and later became Book I in the Legend of Drizzt series.
