The Gamma World is a gonzo post-apocalyptic world set a 26th century where tribal societies live on the remains of a technologically advanced civilization. Players take the role of unmutated Pure Strain Humans, or mutant humans, animals, and sometimes plants who have been granted wild powers by radiation. Campaigns are usually exploratory, with characters leaving their home village as the players investigate the strange but familiar world. Acquiring Ancient technological artifacts and discovering their purpose and use is a major theme. While the history of the setting and what exactly caused the destruction of the previous world has changed radically from edition to edition, the blame is generally placed on a mysterious group known as "The Apocalypse". The setting is also linked to Jim Ward's earlier game, Metamorphosis Alpha, with the departure of the giant interstellar colony ship Warden figured into most timelines. While the rule system has changed radically over the years, the setting itself remained relatively constant until the 6th edition, when White Wolf's d20 version attempted to provide a realistic explanation for what is inherently a goofy, over-the-top world.
Alternative background names are: Starship Warden.
