The divergent variant of Dungeons & Dragons that ran from 1977 (with the publication of the Monster Manual) to 2000 (with the release of D&D3E). It was originally created as a more comprehensive version of OD&D more appropriate for tournament play.
There were two major and two minor editions of AD&D. AD&D1 began in 1977 with the Monster Manual. AD&D1.5 introduced new classes and skills to the system through Unearthed Arcana, Oriental Adventures, and the Survival Guides, beginning in 1985. AD&D2 (or "second edition") was a thorough revision of the game that began in 1989. AD&D2.5 involved a revision of the rulebooks and the release of new optional books in 1995.
In calling itself "third edition" Wizard's D&D3E continues the number of AD&D.
The parent system is: D&D / OSR.
