The Arduin system grew out of David A. Hargrave's variant/supplemental rules to the original edition of D&D. The second edition of the game then supplemented that with elements that felt like they originated in RuneQuest. The third edition of the game, Arduin Eternal, was a pretty large revamp to a roll + add system (like RoleMaster).
