The GUMSHOE system revolutionizes investigative scenarios by ensuring that players are never deprived of the crucial clues they need to move the story forward. Adventure creation is a core component of the system.
The system is divided between pool-based Investigative abilities and General abilities which are used where an element of randomness is desirable.
Core clues cost zero points, other clues can be bought using investigative abilities, providing special benefits to the PCs.
General abilities use a d6 role against an difficulty level set by the GM, with the option to add points from General pools to increase the total.
GUMSHOE was written by Robin D Laws, creator of the Dying Earth, and the first release incorporating the rule set is the Esoterrorist, released December 2006.
Each GUMSHOE release adds optional new components to the system, both for characters and adventure creation. Fear Itself, for example, adds Risk Factors (what makes a character act in spite of danger) and The Worst Thing You Ever Did.
Subsidiary systems are: Ashen Stars, Esoterrorists, Gaean Reach, GUMSHOE One-2-One, Night's Black Agents, TimeWatch, Trail of Cthulhu.
