RuneQuest was a game system originally designed in 1978 for play in the world of Glorantha in the Third Age. It has since undergone four editions.
The first and the second edition were both published by Chaosium and were entirely Glorantha based.
The third edition was published by Avalon Hill, licensed from Chaosium, and originally centered on "Fantasy Earth" before returning to Glorantha.
The fourth edition was published by Mongoose Publishing, licensed from Issaries, and centers on Glorantha in the Second Age, though there are also additional settings for Fritz Leiber's Lankhmar and Michael Moorcock's Elric and Hawkmoon, with more planned.
It's since been followed by a fifth edition that Mongoose calls 'RuneQuest II'. Because they've adopted their own numbering scheme, the Mongoose editions can be found under 'Mongoose RuneQuest'. After abandoning the RuneQuest trademark, Mongoose published their RuneQuest II as Legend.
The sixth edition has been announced by the Design Mechanics, consisting of the original developers of Mongoose RuneQuest II. It will expand on the MRQII system.
The parent system is: BRP.
Subsidiary systems are: RuneQuest: Adventures in Glorantha, RuneSlayer.
