d20 refers to games based upon Wizards of the Coast's third edition of Dungeons & Dragons (D&D). These games generally use a d20 plus modifers, rolled against a target number (difficulty class) as the core mechanic, and are usually class and level based.

This category includes games released under Wizard's Open Game License (OGL) and under a combination of the OGL and the d20 System Trademark License (d20STL). The d20STL allowed use of the d20 logo and the inclusion of a statement of compatibility (at least until the d20STL was canceled in 2009), but did not allow character creation rules to be included.

Because of this, "OGL" and "d20" were widely (but incorrectly) used to indicate whether a product used a totally independent systems which may even widely deviate from d20 (though usually they only deviate slightly), or whether the product was a de facto D&D supplement (which was the original purpose of the d20STL). This distinction disappeared entirely after the 2004 collapse of the d20 market when v.3.5. was released, which led many to shy away from the d20STL, even when releasing D&D supplements.
