Spellcraft & Swordplay System Information

Too divergent to be a clone, but definitely inspired by grognardly nostalgia, the system underlying Spellcraft & Swordplay (S&S) is primarily based on the original Dungeons & Dragons 3-Volume Set plus Supplement I: Greyhawk. The combat rules are dervived from an even earlier source, the Chainmail miniature rules, and the rules are cleaned up and otherwise reorganized to modern standards.

The basic mechanic is a 2d6 roll, inspired by Chainmail's combat system, and the entire system is based on d6s though the original edition of S&S had certain "holdovers" like percentile-based thief skills. Spellcasting requires a casting roll (based on the spell's level), and spells are only lost when the caster misses a casting roll. Saves are based on ability checks (similar to Castles & Crusades), and scale uniformly with level.

The revised version of 2009 removed a number of "anachronisms" (like percentile thief skills), and the deluxe version (later in 2009) expanded the basic rules with additional material culled from Monstrous Mayhem supplement.

The parent system is: Chainmail, D&D / Original.
