Edition Summary

Swords & Wizardry is a retro-clone of the original 1974 version ("0e") of Dungeons & Dragons (D&D). The White Box editions were created by taking the original Core Rules and stripping out all elements not present in D&D's original 3-Volume Set. As a result, familiar elements from the Supplements (Greyhawk et. al), like weapons doing different damage or classes using different hit dice, are not present.

Like the Core Rules, White Box is a complete rule set, including monsters and treasures. Characters can choose from the cleric, fighter, and magic-user classes, and from the dwarf, elf, and halfling races. The game caters to both old school and newer gamers with ascending and descending armor class, and consolidates the traditional five saving throws into one number.

Notes on This Edition
The first printing was 250 boxes, available for preorder in January. Due to problems with the box vendor, only the first 50 sets were shipped in February, with the rest shipping in April. A second printing was made available in March, and also shipped in April. The third printing was released in November. The first 50 boxes were from a different vendor, and were lighter weight than later copies. The failure of the vendor to ship more boxes was why the majority were delayed until April. As a consolation prize, the remaining preorder received a bonus adventure. The seconding printing lacked the pencil and graph paper, which were replaced with character sheets. The third printing has a pencil, but has character sheets instead of graph paper, and the first 50 orders include both The Vile Worm of the Eldritch Oak and The Ruins of Ramat adventures.

The box is 6" x 9" x 1.5", and contains:

  • A ziplock with a multi-color set of dice (black d4, yellow d6, white d8, green d10, blue d12, red d20)
  • Book I of IV: Characters (28 pp plus a lightweight cardstock cover)
  • Book II of IV: Spells (28 pp plus a lightweight cardstock cover)
  • Book III of VI: Monsters (40 pp plus a lightweight cardstock cover)
  • Book IV of IV: Treasure (28 pp plus a lightweight cardstock cover)
  • A Quick Primer for Old School Gaming (16 pp, no cover)
And may contain the following:
  • A pad of graph paper (10 one-sided pages that tear off the cardboard backing)
  • A no. 2 pencil
  • The Vile Worm of the Eldritch Oak (the bonus adventure for the preorders who had to wait and the first 50 of the 3rd printing; 16 pp, no cover)
  • The Ruins of Ramat (a bonus adventure for the first 50 of the 3rd printing)
  • Character sheets
The pencil and dice are full size, but the booklets and pad are digest-sized.
